GREENS: sculpting Miniature Figurines

Last update: 30/3/06

Over the years, we've collected a vast range of metal figures, by firms like Grenadier and Reaper and designers like Julie Guthrie and Sandra Garrity. A couple of years ago I decided to have a go at sculpting my own. It seemed like a natural progression - painting figures, carrying out minor adaptations and painting them, carrying out major adaptations and painting them, then sculpting my own. I quickly came to the conclusion that it is as difficult as it seems! I abandoned my attempts for a while, but have now finally taken the plunge and had another go at it, this time with the benefit of a visor with a magnifying glass, which helps considerably. I still have very great respect for the professionals, or anyone who can consistently create 30mm figures that look human.

Travelling Sorceress Travelling Sorceress: approx 33mm ignoring the base. This green is still a bit rough around the edges, but I am fairly pleased with the overall effect. I particularly was trying to do a figure that physically was more solid than typical figures - a UK size 16 or so! - and with a typical English - pear-shaped - figure. I also gave her a sword - and enough muscles to use it - simply because I never really bought into the idea that mages couldn't touch swords. After all, Gandalf does!
